"Better", does not always mean better . I think Eric Clapton, is a more accomplished player now than, say, the Cream era ... but DAMN, he was so badassed then ! I get goose bumps thinking of him ripping into that "Stepin' Out" ( originally on Live Cream II ) .
I like Jerry's playing throughout his career . ( I favor his "mellow sweet " sound , say cira 76 .) There are many factors that make some of the latter stuff seem less inspired . I suspect he was bored with some of the material, "Been down this road before ". And some of it was his later style and inspiration didn't fit the earlier songs . GDTRFB, for instance, seems too choppy, more tense, that the rolling grove , it once had . And though some of it is the whole band, some of it is Jerry . And with the later day Dark Stars, they could get "out there" but I always thought they missed the etherial-psycadellic feel, of the earlier ones . Frankly , I think some of his best playing in the last period, was his acoustic playing with Grisman; here he seems interested .

Bingo DD! RE: Clapton! [hmmm, two for two thus far in this thread with connections to posters in complete agreement...I am on a roll!].

I think he was absolutely fantastic in the 60s, and really don't care for his last 35 yrs or so...that said, as the other BD can attest, I loved what he did with Winwood in last yr's tour, and there he was sorta playing some of both eras, if I can suggest that's possible...? Wishful thinking on my part, but he still could replicate that BlFaith/Cream esque tone to my ears...

I feel like EC is trying to recapture/justify to himself his legacy based on not only his playing with the Cream reunion, then Trucks/Bramhall on that tour focusing on Derek material; then with Winwood doing Blind Faith, and now out with Jeff Beck. Very interesting article/interview with the two of them in last RS. Although he may take big paydays for his cellphone/rock n roll heart commercial, his focus seems to be on recapturing/revisiting stuff. Hell, he just reunited with the Plastic Ono Band (save one) the other night in NYC.

Thanks, BD; wasn't aware of all that...yeah, perhaps it is an important exercise for him, and certainly one that I can understand; gotta be a lot of fun because though everyone is always going on and on about "I have to evolve, learn new things, avoid repetitiously re-visiting the past" and such, it must be cool to do exactly that with the folks with which it seemed to work so well, and in all honestly, didn't get "worn out" at the time (just think, for him, CREAM was only really 3 yrs, and that's one of his longer "groups"...nothing like saying "I, Keith Richards, have played the same song with the same band for 40 yrs" or what have you...hmm, though Keith Richards was born looking tired of everything, so may not apply to him).

"...Keith Richards was born looking tired of everything"

Freakin' outstanding observation.

I owe you one.

I love Mick Taylor era Stones. I think it's some of the best stuff ever and I think Jagger/Richards were, overall, a more interesting writing team than Lennon/McCartney (or did Macca get that changed to McCartney/Lennon).

Looking forward to getting my copy of expanded Exile on Main Street.

Actually, I just love the Stones...even up thru 78 when we used to do disco dead and disco stones with the HS dead cover band, aging ungracefully at the time, at reunion shows at local dive bars...then I was roadie for free, and it was a big fall from our Keystone opener days of 74, but you play your hand I suppose. Anyhow, early Stones was just outstanding IMHO...

Well,we agree again . The early Rolling Stones deserve more attention . They sure had a BIG influence on the Dead ! Lots of those early covers the did came, not from the original artists, but from the Stones covers ( I believe the band said as much ) . Funny, the only actual Jagger/Richards covers they did,"Satisfaction", and "The Last Time" , I never cared much for .

I guess elb's right: I really am the Will Rodgers of the Forum, and of course, he would've been an excellent PM, so probably doesn't hurt me in that regard. Not sure if Miss D will tolerate the western drawl I'll have to sport for the Prom, but Rob's biting brit wit should keep her entertained regardless.

Well, just cause I comment on the dudes seemingly permanent facial expresssion of "oh, shit, do we really have to do this again?" doesn't mean I don't like him. The fact that I cringe every time he tries to play a lead means I don't like him.

Seriously though, great songwriter with some amazing material over the years (just not in the last 30 or so). Kind of like watching Jim Rice in his last seasons. "Dude, hang 'em up already before people forget how good you were"

FYI, Johny Depp working on doc about Keef at moment. The Stones have pretty much sucked forever, although I enjoyed them with Van the Man last time around and the last album was actually pretty good (comparatively). That said, I LOVED the X-pensive Winos' tour. Talk is Cheap was fun, rough and ragged album and tour. I wish he would concentrate on that. Then again, I was actually looking forward to The Faces' reunion tour, so what do I know?

True.

That and I could easily imagine Jerry copying this Keith lick:

Was he really born looking that way or another case of what decades of heroin addiction will do for you?

Dunno...however, I knew the type in grade school: small frame, chip on the shoulder, pointed angular face as if squished in vice or birth canal; real cranky attitude, picking on defenseless other kids (ahem...I got my revenge in HS on the bball court in PE with great SATSIFACTION), but I am probably way off topic now...somehow, always picture him this way from the start. Could be all wrong.

It sounds like you don't like Keith Richards much! He is a scary looking dude.
